Abstract

KAM has successfully delivered the EPC turnkey interior outfitting project for the “Ocean Geology II” research support vessel constructed by Jiangmen Hangtong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of CCCC Fourth Navigation Engineering Bureau.

At the end of April 2022, the EPC turnkey project for theinterior outfitting of the “Ocean Geology II” vessel, undertaken by KAM for CCCC Fourth Navigation Engineering Bureau Jiangmen Hangtong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., was successfully delivered at theJiangmen Hangtong Shipyard in Guangdong.

The Ocean Geology IIis owned by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey Bureau of the China Geological Survey. The conversion project was implemented by CCCC Fourth Navigation Engineering Bureau Jiangmen Hangtong Shipyard Co., Ltd., with conversion design provided by the 708 Research Institute of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation and supervision carried out by China Classification Society Industrial Co., Ltd. KAM served as theE PC general contractor for the vessel’s interior outfitting works.

The vessel was delivered for conversion in September 2020, entered the shipyard for reconstruction in June 2021, and successfully completed comprehensive sea trials in May 2022.

KAM was responsible for the renovation and upgrade of onboard accommodation and functional spaces, including captain’s suites, dining areas, conference rooms, laboratories, and other key compartments. Taking into account the vessel’s structural characteristics and operational requirements, the interior design adopted a human-centered approach, carefully considering the psychological and physiological needs of personnel working in specialized offshore environments.

Living areas were designed to create awarm and comfortable atmosphere, while operational and laboratory spaces emphasize technological functionality and contemporary aesthetics. Service areas focus onpracticality and operational efficiency. Through modern interior design techniques, theOcean Geology II has been transformed into a high-standard example of modern research vessel interior design, integrating aesthetics, environmental considerations, and human-centered functionality.

Following its upgrade and modernization, the Ocean Geology II has become a multi-functional offshore support vessel capable of accompanying ocean drilling ships on global voyages. The vessel provides logistical support services such as material supply, crew rotation, maritime firefighting, and rescue operations.

In addition, it can conduct a wide range of marine scientific research tasks, including environmental assessments, geological sampling, geophysical surveys, mooring operations, and near-seabed topography surveys. The vessel also supports submarine cable laying, deep-water salvage operations, saturation diving, and offshore wind power engineering surveys.

This vessel complements China’s existing fleet of marine research ships and significantly enhances the country’s deep-sea exploration and offshore engineering support capabilities.
